February 16th Guest Bartender Night at The Hardware Store restaurant focuses on good journalism, to raise funds for VHS Riptide. How do we know what are reading in the news is true? Now, more than ever, there is a need for responsible, facts-based reporting.
During Writing Back! News in An Alt Fact Environment, four accomplished, veteran journalists–Mary Bruno (author and former editor-in-chief of Crosscut), Knute Berger (writer at Crosscut and Seattle Magazine), Eugene Carlson (author and former Wall Street Journal editor and columnist), and Leslie Brown (former editor-in chief of the Beachcomber)–will discuss challenges they, and their colleagues, face in this new era of “alternative facts” and false news. This discussion promises to be a lively, value-added part of the evening.
Proceeds from drink sales, a suggested donation of $10 for the panel discussion, and a raffle, will go toward sending a dozen high school journalists to a National conference at the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York this coming March. Raffle items include: a dinner for two at the fabulous Matt Dillon restaurant Sitka and Spruce, a package stay at the The Lodges on Vashon and dinner at Bramblehouse, and a treasure trove of island goodies to name a few.
Come enjoy a drink, listen to a timely discussion and help pave the path for the future of responsible journalism!
Thursday, February 16, 6:00 to 9:00
Panel discussion begins at 6:30 and seats are limited.
